Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?
I take my magic performance very serious, but I don't take myself too serious. I believe in presenting my illusions in a humorous manner instead of a mysterious manner. Over the past 17 years I have developed programs which are based on what pleases my audiences. We "throw out the bad" and keep the "good". Bottom line is our goal is to entertain.
What do you like most about your job?
I thoroughly enjoy helping people have a fun and happy experience. When people come up to me after a performance and say "Thank you, you made my day". That is what I like most
What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
They ask: "How did you do that?" My answer is: "The real question is WHY did I do that?"
If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?
If I were a customer, I would wish I knew how the programs and effects were created.
Do you have a favorite story from your work?
One time I was performing for a large group of adults and in the middle of the act I completely forgot how to do the next trick. I just stopped and stared and said, "I am so sorry, but I forgot how to do this." Believe it or not, I got a nice round of applause just for that.
What do you wish customers knew about you or your profession?
I wish they knew that each magician is completely different from each other. Each one puts his or her own personality into the performance resulting in a completely different result even if the same effect or trick. Knowing this fact would make customers wiser when choosing a magician for their program
What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
Check out several magicians and examine their track record, testimonials, website, youtube postings, and then hire your entertainer
What important information should buyers have before seeking you out? For example, someone looking to have their room painted should know how big the room is, whether or not the ceiling requires painting, if there is trimming or crown moldings, etc.
Know what kind of event you are planning in terms of size of audience, location, inside vs outside. Many times magicians will specialize in certain aspects of magic entertainment. A close-up magician, for example, would not be a good choice if you are in need of a stage performer
How did you decide to get in your line of work?
Magic started out as a hobby when I was 8 years old. About 17 years ago (while it was still a hobby) I happened to overhear a professional magician in the local magic shop say that he made money doing magic. Up until then, it never occurred to me to perform magic for money. I went out and listed an advertisement in the Yellow Pages and had some business cards printed up. I did magic part time up until about 2 1/2 years ago when I got the "golden handshake" from the telephone company. There and then I became a full time professional magic entertainer. I wish I had done it a long time ago.
What are your most common types of jobs?
Birthday parties, company picnics, guest speaker, restaurant entertainer at table-side, carnivals, grand openings, entertaining people in line during Christmas sales, convention booths, VIP rooms, hospitality suites, Monte Carlo nights, Church events, Sunday School Classes, Summer camps, Boy Scout and Girl Scout events.
Tell us about a recent job you did that you are particularly proud of.
I did a stage performance at a church function and at the end, a lady came up on stage and said, "My face hurts." I said, "Why what happened, what's wrong?" She said, "My face hurts because I was laughing so hard!"
Do you do any sort of continuing education to stay up on the latest developments in your field?
I am constantly reading magic trade journals, checking information on magic chat rooms, and visiting the local magic supplier. This keeps me up to date pretty well.
What are the latest developments in your field? Are there any exciting things coming in the next few years or decade that will change your line of business?
All magic effects are based on basic principles which have been around for many many years. The latest developments in magic make use of modern technology combining with the ancient techniques and secrets resulting in much improved mysteries to perform
Describe your most recent project, what it involved, how much it cost, and how long it took.
My most recent project was putting together a 45 minute show to entertain the local chapter of the International Brotherhood of Magicians at their end of year party. Performing for magicians is most difficult because they watch you as a technician watching another technician. I rehearsed for a month before the program. When the performance night finally came, it went off very well. I put together a program of effects which I knew that many of them had never seen. They were entertained and were pleased. It took me a while to put it all together, but it was worth every minute
If you have a complicated pricing system for your service, please give all the details here.
My pricing is very simple. It is based on length of performance, type of performance and locale. We also have value added features if desired.
If you were advising someone who wanted to get into your profession, what would you suggest?
Jump in and do it. Find a mentor, read books, watch DVDs, master the technical aspects of the business by practicing over and over, but never forget that the most important thing is to be entertaining. Without being entertaining, all you are showing people are puzzles, and no one wants to see puzzles. Presentation is everything!
Write your own question and answer it.
